Dear Daughters……

On this date in 1953 I met your beautiful mother who was my blind date for the Christmas Ball at CMR. And as you have heard numerous times, the minute that I saw her, gorgeous gown, elbow length gloves etc that ladies wore those days, standing in the door of 53 Arlington Avenue, Westmount PQ, I said to my self, “I’m going to marry her." And I did and you can thank me for the most important decision of my life and yours.

Love,
….. Dad

Unfortunately, Heather suffers from Alzheimer's disease and now lives in a long term care home. I met Marg in August 1959 in Marville France and we were married 16 December 1960. She also suffers from Alzheimer's disease but so far she lives at home with me. She would undoubtedly be better cared for in a nursing home, but the wait lists are long.

I thought that you would interested that Peter was taken to the Mahone Bay school's Remembrance Day service and was introduced as having been in the CMR' first graduation class. I was not there so I am sure how they found out and I don't know if Peter understood but I think that it was nice of the school.

Bonjour Bill:

Bill……
I attended a lovely Remembrance Service in the Senate Chambers this morning. A number of CMR senior cadets were there and after the service I spoke with three of them where I proudly threw out my 3739. To my absolute surprise two had no idea what their college number was and the third said it was 37,300 or there about. None the less they all were excellent examples of the very best. Two of them delivered the Commitment to Remember in a meaningful clear fashion. It was a delight to talk with them.

I also had a brief chat with LGen (Ret’d) Rick Evraire where I mentioned the August Home Coming and he immediately picked up on you being the Cadet Wing Commander of the 52 class and he went on to proudly say that his 54 class was the first to have to go through the obstacle course. I had forgotten that.

I also said that I was representing you as the Class of 52 representative. We also spoke of Jacques Petit whom Rick remembered.

BILL: I’m afraid it is not so much as “will not” and more like “can’t” because I would love to attend. We are moving back to the Vancouver area to be closer to our children and their families at the end of June and the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame has finally managed to arranged to hold their 2020 Induction Celebration in their new Quarters at the Calgary Airport which happily includes the Red Knight Aerobatic Demonstration Team and all its Members also being Invested in the Belt of Orion Award.

This will be on June 23 …just a week after our move. Two of my siblings and two of their children are attending on my behalf and my son Brian will stand in my stead when called for my 1966 participation as Principal Red Knight. Physically, I remain quite active compared to other males I witness struggling along in their mid eighties but my tolerance and endurance require I limit my exertions in duration with daily naps. I don’t know how I got here in my Eighty - seventh year without noticing!! Additionally, I’ve been putting up with a challenge from prostate and bladder cancer for about 5 years now with scopes and surgeries every three to six months or so and I would guess I will not be able to run against that idiot / communist Trudeau in the next election after all!
Warm regards…. maybe you can transmit same to our classmates on my behalf?

Subject: Forget? NEVER!!!

Ed note: The following email has been checked and not found on Snopes.com. That does not prove that all of the information in it is true. Note that many people who deny the holocaust are not Muslims, and many Muslims do not deny it.
See, for example, The Atlantic.com., which says, in part, that the holocaust is believed to be a myth by 3% of Christians, 13% of Muslims, 11% of Hindus, 6% of Buddhists and 35 of those with no religion..

?I find it deeply offensive that people who have minimal, if any, direct knowledge of, or involvement with, the Holocaust should struggle so avidly to erase the memory of that enormous, obscene and entirely sinful ugliness. Let us, never, ever forget!!!

Terry

It is a proven matter of history that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and made to bury the dead.

He did this because he said in words to this effect:

“Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened”.

The UK debated whether to remove The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offends' the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving in to it.

It is now more than 60 years since the Second World War in Europe ended. This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the 6 million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians, and 1,900 Catholic priests Who were 'raped, burned, starved, beaten, experimented on, humiliated and murdered while many in the world looked the other way!

Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust to be 'a myth,' it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.
This e-mail is intended to reach 400 million people! Be a link in the memorial chain and help distribute this around the world.

How many years will it be before the attack on the World Trade Center 'NEVER HAPPENED?'

Because it offends some Muslims? Really???

Always enjoy your updates and the included humour. However, the regular reminders of CMR are what I most appreciate because, even though I wasn’t allowed to graduate, my time there played a major, and unforgettably positive, role in my life. My exposure to la belle province, the college itself, ‘la langue’ and ‘les gars’ were major building blocks of the TSR Jones that was to have successful Army and aviation careers, and I speak proudly of them at every opportunity.

Wishing you and yours well, Bill, and hoping we can carry our contact into our 90’s,

Although the final decision rests with the Colleges and DND, I am cautiously optimistic that in-person FDSDR will be possible this year. Here’s what we know so far:

• Chapitre Fort Saint-Jean will be sending out Information on CMRSJ plans by end-February. The target is an in-person FDSDR in the latter part of August, but CMRSJ needs to wait until BOTC schedules are finalized before setting the date. The program will be as usual, the obstacle course on Saturday morning, followed in the afternoon by the Induction, Badging and RMC Club commemorative coin ceremony and in the evening the dinner/dance for the Old Brigade and all ex-cadets. For the entry classes of 1970 and 1971 that were inducted in the Old Brigade virtually by Zoom, the intention is to have both classes with the entry class of 1972 on parade for their induction, face-to-face, followed by their dinner/dance. This year, CMRSJ will be celebrating the 70th anniversary; therefore the entry class of 1952 shall be honored. More details on the 70th anniversary will follow shortly by the Fort Saint-Jean Chapter.

• RMC is on 16 to 18 September, with Obstacle Course and Coin Presentation Friday afternoon, Badging Parade Saturday morning, sports in the afternoon and the Old Brigade Dinner Saturday evening, and March to the Arch on Sunday morning. Details will be provided shortly by the Adjudant of the old brigade, Don Bell, 7064.

• The Old Brigade is one large family. Whether we attended RMC, RRMC or CMRSJ, everyone is welcome at all Old Brigade gatherings. This year, all Brigade members – especially the graduating classes of 1975, 1976 and 1977 – are warmly invited to attend the FDSDR at CMRSJ. Join with CMRSJ entry year classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 to be inducted into the Old Brigade, and enjoy a great dinner and dance in Pavillon Dextraze. Bring your grandchildren (it might save you hundreds of $$$) and you’ll have all day Sunday to enjoy Montreal.

Let me start by saying how much I appreciate all the news and views you put forward every week. I am (for all intents and purposes), a computer illiterate and that is my excuse for not keeping in touch.

You will recall that Joan and I spent the last 20 winters in Florida but that is now over. We decided that we were too old to make the trip and have now sold our condo and are trying to regain our Canadian love of winter. With little success.

At 87-88 we are both reasonably well – enjoying our home in Kingston, close to our youngest son, who looks after us very well.

If I promised to do a better job of keeping in touch you would be wise to ignore it but now you at least know that I am alive.

Very best regards -- Dean

Bonsoir M.Lynn,

Hi Pierre,
2951 is 1952 in a different order.
Not intentional.
I don’t know how I managed to mangle 1952 like that.

In this present time anything goes. New rule with Political Masters: a gym fit for two people at a time and a swimming pool for myself most of the time are regarded as COVI attraction. sitting at 160 Chapel Ottawa. Well, have it your way Premier Ontario, but no cash accepted.
Cheers.

Just a couple of notes about Gerry Wharton. I first met Gerry on infantry phase training in Camp Borden. We clicked. Later I remember a couple of recurrences (vaguely).

I guess the first one was during phase training, we used to haunt the Armoured Corps mess in Borden (don’t ask me why). We drank a bit but mostly sang.

Later in life, Gerry was my career mangler (oops!) manager., I decided that to let Kathryn go back to school in Halifax, I would ask for an overseas posting. I got a phone call: Gerry:, “I hear that you want an overseas posting.” “Yes, K wants to go back to school in Halifax.” “OK, How would you like to go to Korea?” “Korea?!!”. “Oh, yes we have a major and a sergeant with the UN Command, Military Armistice Commission there . Yoy can have the major’s job if you like.” And so it happened.

Initially, this was an unaccompanied slot. Dextrase decided that we had too many of these, one year unaccompanied, so he cut several to 6 months and some to accompanied, two years, with the option of a 3rd.. Korea came up in the latter grouping.

With Gerry’s help. I was extended into the accompanied posting (hiding out from the Unification disaster) . While this was going on, I hitched RCAF rides back to Canada, as my mother had died.. While I was in Canada I when to NDHQ for briefing. Gerry got me in tow and home for dinner. After a lovely dinner with his sweet wife, he took me down to his wine cellar, pulling bottles off of the array, saying “Try this”.

I woke up in the next am, on his sofa (with little people around looking at me) and late for my first debrief appointment. Gerry smoothed it.

One o my most favourite people.
